617 Sqn, the Dambusters, is most famous for its 1943 raid on the strategically important Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams above the industrial heartlands of Germany's Ruhr valley. 617 Sqn was created on 15 May 1943 with this specific task in mind. 8 of its 19 modified Lancaster bombers did not return home.

617 Squadron reformed in 1982 with Tornado GR1s at RAF Marham, initially in the strike role, but more recently in the maritime strike mission based at RAF Lossiemouth.

617 Sqn continued to fly the Tornado GR1 until it was replaced by the updated GR4 and it was with these that the squadron carried out the first attacks with the RAF's stand-off weapon - Storm Shadow - during Operation Telic in April 2003.
