The "Kings Shilling" Heavy Gauge 1 Pint Pewter Tankard with Double Glass base - Hand crafted in Sheffield.
Navy folk law (and wikipedia) tells us that 18th century Royal Navy press gangs (recruitment officers) used to hide a signing-up bounty (the 'King's Shilling') in the 'free pints' that they offered to unsuspecting sailors in waterside taverns. Drinking the beer was deemed to be acceptance of the money, and commitment to recruitment in the King's service navy. The glass-bottomed tankard was said to have been introduced by landlords so that men would spot the trick before it was too late. Click on the photo above to read the story on the tankard itself.
The Shilling you see in the base of this tankard is trapped between two glass bases - this enables the coin to move around and prevents it from coming in contact with any beer used in the tankard
